Bluejacket Pool has been at the center of the Oak Park Neighborhood and surrounding community for the past 51 years. In 2024, the City of Overland Park made the decision to permanently close Bluejacket Pool.
With the announcement of its closure, the community has coalesced around the importance of Bluejacket Pool to the area it serves. It is our hope that the city will replace the pool with another pool, not a splash pad.
We would love you to be part of this effort.
In 2024, Bluejacket Pool opened for its final season, knowing that the pool had a substantive leak that was costing the city both environmentally and financially. In July, the city announced the permanent closure of Bluejacket Pool.
The goal of this group is to urge the city to not replace the pool area with a splash pad, but to put another community-based pool in its stead. This amenity isn’t just about recreation, but about being a community gathering space. It is a place where neighbors gather, play-based childhoods, physical activity and more. We believe this aligns with the city’s overall strategic plan, Framework OP. Moreover, as the city works on PlaybookOP, it is noted that Bluejacket Pool is specifically mentioned in the survey responses 222 times with pools being mentioned 800 times. It is a sought-after community amenity.
To achieve this goal, we will communicate respectfully with the Overland Park City Council and city staff in an effort to encourage them to replace Bluejacket Pool. We look forward to engaging in a community conversation about how to make Bluejacket Pool a success in the future - including renovations and improvements that will enhance its accessibility as well as its appeal to others.
